Since its foundation, the department has been strongly represented in almost all branches of algebra. Research interests of faculty members include locally finite groups, group actions and automorphisms, representation theory, cluster algebras. There are several regular seminars and conferences organized by the members of the group.
Algebraic Geometry and Number Theory
The department has a dynamic research group in algebraic geometry and number theory. Research interests of faculty members include vector bundles, moduli spaces, algebraic surfaces, algebraic and analytic number theory, arithmetic of elliptic curves.
The department is well known for its strong tradition in several branches of analysis. Research interests of the faculty members include functional analysis, operator theory, Banach lattices, Köthe spaces. There are several seminars on analysis organized in and outside the department by the group members.
Coding Theory and Cryptography
Coding theory and cryptography are at the crossroads of pure and applied mathematics. Research in these areas are conducted by four permanent members of the faculty, who are also in close contact with the Institute of Applied Mathematics
Group members: Ersan Akyıldız, Ali Doğanaksoy, Ferruh Özbudak, Muhiddin Uğuz
Differential Equations and Numerical Analysis
The Mathematics Department of METU has a well recognized research group in differential equations and numerical analysis, whose members work on topics such as numerical solutions of ordinary and partial differential equations, dynamical systems, difference equations, special functions and integrable systems. Several members of the group also take part in research activities of the Institute of Applied Mathematics.
