Funding opportunities

The Department of Mathematics at METU actively supports its faculty and researchers in securing national and international funding. Funding opportunities are available through government agencies, international programs, and institutional support.

Faculty members and students are encouraged to apply for these programs. This page provides brief guidelines for funding applications that best suit our faculty members' and students' needs.

1. National Funding
 

1a. TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey)  


TÜBİTAK provides research grants for individual and collaborative projects, including:

1001 – Scientific and Technological Research Projects
  • Purpose: Supports projects aimed at producing new knowledge, scientific interpretations, or solving technological problems.
  • Duration: Up to 36 months.

3501 – Career Development Program
  • Purpose: Designed for early-career researchers with a PhD, supporting them in establishing independent research careers.
  • Duration: Up to 36 months.

2219 – International Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program
  • Purpose: Provides funding for postdoctoral researchers to conduct research abroad, enhancing international collaboration and academic competencies.
  • Eligibility: Turkish citizens with a PhD.

2218 – Domestic Postdoctoral Research Fellowship Program
  • Purpose: Supports postdoctoral researchers conducting projects within Turkey, strengthening national collaborations and academic productivity.
  • Scope: Projects at universities, research institutes, R&D centers, and technoparks.

2232 - A International Fellowship for Outstanding Researchers
  • Purpose: Encourage return to Türkiye & support experienced Turkish researchers abroad to continue their work in Türkiye

  • Purpose: Encourage return to Türkiye and support early-stage Turkish researchers abroad to continue their work in Türkiye

1b. METU BAP (Scientific Research Projects Fund)

METU provides internal funding opportunities through the Scientific Research Projects Fund (BAP).  Applications are open to all academic staff, with projects evaluated based on scientific merit and institutional priorities.

Applications are submitted directly through METU’s BAP Office. 

We list here some relevant project types supported by METU BAP Coordination Unit

  • Genel Araştırma Projeleri (BAP-Genel) / General Research Projects
    Projects carried out by METU faculty members without restrictions on research areas, covering general scientific research and development activities.
  • Kariyer Destek Projeleri (BAP-Kariyer) / Career Development Projects
    Projects designed to support the initial research activities of faculty members who have started working at METU within the last three years.
  • Lisansüstü Tez Projeleri (BAP-Tez) / Graduate Thesis Projects
    Research projects conducted jointly by thesis advisors and graduate students, supporting master’s (BAP Tez-YL) and doctoral (BAP Tez-D) thesis studies. The thesis work must be covered within the TEZ project framework.
  • Bölüm Araştırma Projeleri (BAP-Bölüm) / Departmental Research Projects
    Projects aimed at strengthening the research infrastructure and increasing the capacity of departments.
  • Doktora Sonrası Araştırmacı Projeleri / Postdoc Projects (BAP-DOSAP): These are scientific research projects conducted in collaboration with our university's full-time faculty members and researchers who have completed their doctorate and are not affiliated with the institution.

  • ERC – European Research Council
    Provides prestigious grants for frontier research across all disciplines. Supports individual researchers and their teams to pursue groundbreaking projects.

    A networking program that funds collaborative research networks across Europe. COST Actions support workshops, training schools, and researcher mobility rather than direct project funding.

  • Swiss Government Excellence Scholarships
    Program: Offered annually by the Swiss Confederation to promote international exchange and research cooperation.
    Opportunities: Supports postgraduate researchers (PhD, postdoc) and artists to pursue studies or research at Swiss universities, Federal Institutes of Technology, and arts schools.
